FFA at CPI Placed at National Competition

The FFA team at Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology came back last month from the National FFA Competition in Indianapolis as one of the best teams in the country.

Horticulture teacher and FFA adviser Joe Luther said the team took home the silver award, and its members also placed gold, silver and bronze in individual competitions. Bald Eagle Area student Charlee Harris won first overall and received the gold award in Nursey and Landscape Applications. Classmates Derek Rishel and Alexis Witherite got the silver award, and Nicole Haupt received bronze.

“It was a phenomenal experience,” Luther said. “There were 60,000 people there, and it’s the best of the best.”

A variety of practicums were held. The team event, Luther said, included sales and landscape design, in addition to installing a landscape. The individual competitions required students to participate in a written exam, insect and disease identification, written and verbal customer service activities, and sales pitches.

In order to be eligible to compete at nationals, the team must’ve had to win the state competition held in June, which they did.

“It was the first time at nationals for this event, and the first time we won states and represented Pennsylvania at nationals,” Luther said.

Members from FFA are now gearing up for the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January with attempts to win for the fourth consecutive time.
