Students Start Project for PA Farm Show

Just before Thanksgiving break, students in Horticulture and Landscaping instructor Joe Luther’s class at Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology began building a landscape and hardscape unit they plan to present at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January.

The design was submitted in September, and Luther said the theme this year is to craft a “Garden of the Future.” For Luther’s class, that includes installing a rain curtain and hydroponics system that gives the structure a rain backdrop while watering plants such as strawberries, tomatoes and other vegetables.

“There will be water that recirculates, and it’s basically going to look like it’s constantly raining and will drop down and grow them (the plants) hydroponically,” Luther said.

Materials were donated by EP Henry, and include some materials like cast stone wall blocks that won’t officially be released until next year.

If the class walks away with the Best of Show title, it will be their fourth consecutive win. After the farm show, the hope is also to build the same landscape/hardscape on CPI’s campus, Luther said.
