CPI to Host Give Kids a Smile Day Event

February is Children’s Dental Awareness Month, and Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology is hosting a Give Kids a Smile Day event from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 23 at the school’s campus, 540 N. Harrison Road, Pleasant Gap.

Open to families with difficulty affording dental care, CPI Dental Assisting instructor Mindi Tobias said the institute’s dental health staff will team up with community dental volunteers to provide children ages 17 and younger with free dental exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatments and sealants.

“It is a very rewarding opportunity for everyone involved,” Tobias said. “It is very humbling to be able to see how thankful parents are for us to see their children. Some of them are way overdue for their cleanings and some children have never seen a dentist at all.”

The event is part of a larger national initiative through the American Dental Association Foundation, which has a mission to provide care for under-served children, according the ADA Foundation website.

“Unfortunately, life can be very expensive, and many times children go without dental treatment, which can affect more than their smile; it can affect their overall health and self-esteem,” Tobias said. “When a child enters the room and won’t smile because they are embarrassed, and then leave beaming from ear to ear, the feeling of pride our volunteers possess from helping to make that life change is priceless.”

Give Kids a Smile was established in 2002 by Jeff Dalin and B. Ray Storm at a dental clinic in St. Louis.
