Is Distance Education Right For Me?

Distance education requires self-discipline, self-motivation, and efficient time management abilities. Students must feel confident in their ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with instructors and peers through online channels. Distance education can provide self-paced, flexible learning; however, you must still be present, engaged in the course work, and able to meet specific deadlines.

Online courses are not beneficial for all learners. Some thrive in a traditional classroom setting with face-to-face learning.

Distance Education Technology Requirements

Internet Connection: Wi-Fi or high-speed Internet connection

Operating System: Windows 10 or Mac OS 10.13

Browser: Firefox, Chrome, Safari (Latest Versions)

Hardware: Microphone, Speakers,Web Camera

Other Requirements: Office 365, Basic abilities using Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Some courses may require the use of specific tools, such as a PDF Reader, Anti-Virus Software, Video Player, and printing capabilities.

Additional Information: Certain technologies such as mobile devices, phones, or tablets may not provide the minimum requirements necessary for distance education coursework.

What is the difference between distance education and face-to-face education?

Distance education allows students to focus on schoolwork at times that work best for their schedule. However, online courses still require engagement, self-discipline and the ability to meet deadlines. Some learners are better suited for face-to-face education, which provides live interactions with instructors and peers.

Am I eligible for financial aid?

How do I communicate with my instructor and peers?

Students can communicate with instructors and peers through various channels such as email, text, phone, BlackBoard, or schedule an in-person appointment. Instructors for distance education will provide the students with available office hours.

How do I apply for the program?

After determining that distance education is the right fit for you, you can apply on the CPI website.

What is the difference between an asynchronous and synchronous course?

Asynchronous courses allow students to access their course work at their own pace. This type of course does not require students to log on at specific times. Asynchronous courses are good for students who need flexible learning schedules.

Synchronous courses require students to logon for predetermined class sessions. This type of course allows for real time discussions and interactions with instructors and peers.

Hybrid learning is a combination of asynchronous and synchronous learning.

Currently, most courses are asynchronous but some are setup in a hybrid format.

Is there tutoring or face-to-face assistance if needed?

There is tutoring and face-to-face support available if needed. The student will need to contact the instructor to schedule a day and time to meet on campus.
