Horticulture and Landscaping Design
Students enrolled in the Horticulture and Landscape Technology program will be learning about the greenhouse industry. Students will learn greenhouse management skills and will be able to focus their career on either floral design or landscaping. A student entering the Horticulture and Landscape Technology program should have an interest in plants, working with their hands, and working in an outdoor or greenhouse environment. All students focusing on the Floral Design option will be enrolled in the AM session and students focusing on the Landscaping option will be enrolled in the PM session. Students enrolled in the program are also members of FFA in which they will learn leadership skills and compete in county contests. Upon completion of the program students will be required to take the Pennsylvania pesticide core exam to obtain their pesticide certification. Students can obtain jobs at local nurseries, floral shops, greenhouses, and landscape companies or enroll in a post secondary school.

PA Pesticide Applicator Licenses:
Private Pesticide Applicator
An applicator intends to purchase and/or apply restricted use pesticides for the purpose of producing an agricultural commodity on land which is owned or rented by that person or their employer. To become a certified private applicator, testing is required. An examination is necessary to maintain: Private Applicator Pesticide Applicator Records.

Certified Pesticide Applicator
To be eligible for certification, a person must pass two written examinations (core and a minimum of one category) and be employed by a pesticide application business. Once exams have been successfully passed, that person has 12 months to apply for certification with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Currently, there are 26 categories of commercial and public applicators.

OSHA – 10 hour card
OSHA directs national compliance initiatives in occupational safety and health. Through the methods described below, OSHA helps businesses protect their workers and reduce the number of workplace deaths, injuries and illnesses. When employees stay safe and healthy, companies can reduce workers’ compensation insurance costs and medical expenses, decreased payout for return-to-work programs, reduce faulty products, and lower costs for job accommodations for injured workers. Indirectly, additional benefits such as increased productivity, lower training costs due to fewer replacement workers and decreased costs for overtime have also been attributed to OSHA’s research and guidance.
