Dear Staff and Families:

I am writing to share important information about a cybersecurity incident recently reported by PowerSchool, the software provider of the Student Information System (SIS) used by the Central PA Institute of Science and Technology.

On December 28, 2024, PowerSchool became aware of unauthorized access to certain information.  On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, PowerSchool informed our leadership team that they experienced a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain PowerSchool SIS customer data. Unfortunately, they have confirmed that the information belongs to some of CPI’s families and educators.

PowerSchool informed us that the data involved primarily includes parent and student contact details, such as names and addresses. They identified that some personally identifiable information (PII), including social security numbers (SSNs) and medical information, was impacted. However, CPI does not store SSNs for current students or employees in PowerSchool, so no SSN breach should have occurred for them. PowerSchool is urgently investigating to confirm whether any PII related to our students was affected.

Here is what we know about the incident:

  • The incident has been contained, with no evidence of malware or ongoing unauthorized activity.
  • PowerSchool has deactivated the compromised credential, reset all passwords, and strengthened access controls for the affected portal.
  • Law enforcement and third-party cybersecurity experts have been engaged to investigate and respond to the situation.

PowerSchool is committed to transparency.  They will reach out to individual students, families, and staff members who have been affected by the breach.  PowerSchool will also offer credit monitoring for affected adults and identity protection services for affected minors in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Protecting our students, families, and employees is something we take seriously. With PowerSchool’s help, more information and resources will be provided to you as it becomes available.

We will continue to monitor this situation closely and keep you informed of any updates.

Thank you for your understanding and partnership in maintaining a safe and secure educational environment for all.

Sincerely,

MaryAnn E. Volders
